There is no denying the fact that the coming of Jamshedpur Workers’ College was the result of the untiring efforts, great zeal and tremendous self-sacrifice of toiling masses under the able leadership of late Madan Mohan Mishra, Late Sri B. N. Kishore, Sri Manoranjan Das and the Founder Principal Sri J. D. Kishore. Jamshedpur Workers’ College, as the name itself suggest, is a unique college of its kind in the country. As the name goes, it blossomed out of the noble mission of imparting higher education to and fulfilling the dream of the youth section of the toiling mass of the steel city along with their work life. While it started with a boon for needy and unprivileged section of the society, today it has blossomed into one of the leading institute of the industrial town. Seated on the river belt of river Subarnareka, it enjoys a calm, serene atmosphere, congenial to learning.

Jamshedpur Workers’ College, a premier institute of higher education at Mango, Jamshedpur came into being on the eve of 1959. The Ranchi University came into existence in 1960 and the college was affiliated to this new born university and in 1976 the college became a constituent unit of the university.  The co-educational institution had started its glorious journey of imparting education with one year pre- university programme in Arts. Within one year, the College started Bachelor of Art programme to synchronize the development of the stream. Keeping the increasing importance of science education in view, the college initiated Bachelor of Science in 1977 and honors programme in Mathematics started in 1981 followed by other honors programmes in sciences and in commerce. New courses were added to the curriculum of the college with due permission of the university at different stages of its progress. It was in 2004 the college got the opportunity of to be assessed by NAAC and was accredited C Grade. In 2005 the college was provincialized along with other 188 colleges by the government of Jharkhand. Kolhan University was established in 2009 at Chaibasa and the college became a permanent constitute unit of the university.

At present the college fulfills the education need of about 5000 students who get admitted in to the 18 departments in three major faculties, such as Arts, Science and Commerce of the college. All the departments except Botany and Zoology offer UG degree in both in Honours and General level, while the latter two offer only General and Subsidies courses in the concerned subject. The college runs two PG programmes, those are, two years’ MA programme in Geography and and two years’ degree in M.Com. The college has been stood up with the intellectual need of the society. As a result, three self-financed programmes, namely, B. Sc. with BCA Honours, B.Com with BBA Honours, and B. Sc. IT has been introduced in the curriculum of the college.

Recently, the college has taken initiatives to make the campus more techno-savvy, as a result the campus become fully Wi-Fi enabled which is available freely to the students and staff. The Central Library of the college is enabled with INFLIBINET subscription with adequate facility of reprography. All the departments and sections are well equipped with computers and internets along with printers and scanners. The challenge of electric power management has been recently resolved with installation of high capacity transformer, centralized generator and adequate numbers of inverters and UPSes. The management is planning to provide classrooms with ICT facilities and to connect all class rooms with the presently available well equipped Audio-Visual room. The college is also going to bring the benefit of Spoken Tutorial project by MNE through ICT to all its students.

The college seems to be a beautiful garden with its students, who come from different economic, social, cultural, religious and lingual backgrounds but treated equally and get equal opportunity both in curricular and extra-curricular aspects for which the College Management and the Equal Opportunity Cell work round the clock. The college campus is free from ragging, sexual or any type of harassment and all kind of anti-social activities. After all, CCTV cameras have been installed at each corner of the campus along with inside the buildings for the safeguard of the students but not compromising with anyone’s privacy.

The college has a clear motto for its student – ‘Enter to Learn, Exit to Serve.’ Due to the dedicated teaching faculties and all staff members, Jamshedpur Workers’ College has been always giving better output in compare to the input. Each year, a considerable amount of our students top the university examinations. The pass percentage is also generally higher than other colleges of the university. Despite, the challenges of infrastructure, our students has been bringing delights to us by their increasing success in extra-curricular activities in both state and national levels. Though there is no formal mechanism available at the college to record the students’ post-college progression and advance carrier option, yet through social networking and by some other media, the college tracks that significant percentage of our alumni are in responsible social, political, administrative and academic positions in service of nation, society and mankind.

Jamshedpur Workers’ College is immensely aware of its Institutional Social Responsibilities. Accordingly, the institution has been thriving for social and national service at its level in all possible means. ‘Joy of Giving’ is one among many initiatives taken by the management to provide necessary help to the needy and unprivileged people of the nearby slums and rural area. Besides, the NSS unit as a solid team of teachers and students is effectively functioning in support of social causes and public awareness.

Despite many limitations, the institution has been continuously endeavoring to provide quality education to all and to fulfill its all social responsibilities. In this direction we have achieved a lot, but all we know that miles and miles yet to go.
